What is required of the US publisher, once the project has been selected?

For the recipients of a French Voices Award, proper credits for the program will need to be included on the copyright page of the book. Furthermore, a preface by an American writer and logo are also required.

For the recipients of an Hemingway Grant and Acquisition of Rights programs, proper credits will need to be included on the copyright page of the book.

When will the awards be announced?
French Voices Awards will be announced twice a year on our website frenchculture.org and presented at a prestigious ceremony.

Acquisition of Rights: Grantees will be notified by email.

Hemingway Grant: Selected applicants will receive an email requesting documents, to be sent within two weeks, in order to receive the grant payment. If a publisher doesn’t send the documents within this time frame, the grant will be allocated to another project.

Who is the French Voices Award paid to and what share goes to the translator?
The French Voices Award rewards both the American publisher and the translator with a total prize of $6,000. The full amount will be transferred to the publisher of each selected project: $4,000 to cover the preface and publishing costs and a $2,000 non-negotiable bonus to be allocated to the translator ($5,000 and $1,000 respectively in case of a comic book or picture book).

Furthermore, the French Voices Committee will now choose for each year a Grand Prize Winner. The winner will receive $10,000 in total ($6,000 to cover the preface and the publishing costs and a $4,000 non-negotiable bonus to be allocated to the translator; and respectively $7,000 and $3,000 in case of a comic book or picture book). The French author of the translated book will also be awarded the opportunity to do a book tour in the US.

I am an American publisher. Can I apply to more than one of the programs listed on your website?
From now on there will be a single application system for the French Voices Award, Hemingway Grant and Acquisition of Rights programs.
– You can not receive a Hemingway Grant AND a French Voices Award for the same book.
– You can not receive a grant from the CNL AND a Hemingway Grant.

Any other combination is possible. You could for instance receive a French Voices Award + an Acquisition of Rights grant and a CNL grant.

Which translation assistance programs are compatible with the CNL Grant?
Projects awarded a French Voices Award or/and Acquisition of Rights Grant are also eligible for the CNL Grant, which is awarded by the Centre National du Livre (CNL) for a work translated into English. The Cultural Services are not responsible for this program. There is a separate application process for the CNL Grant, which must be completed by the French publisher. The C.N.L. Grant is not compatible with the Hemingway Grant. More info: http://cnlivre.eway.fr/?Subventions-pour-la-traduction-d,639

If my project is selected for a French Voices Award or a Hemingway Grant, when can I expect to receive the award/grant?
The award or grant is to be paid to the American publisher. It will only be paid after you’ve provided a copy of the fully executed Acquisition of Rights contract and after you’ve signed a contract with FACE (for the French Voices Award) or the Cultural Services of The French Embassy (for Hemingway Grant).

If I have not yet signed a contract with a French publisher, at what point would I be required to do so?

French Voices Award:
You will have a full year to provide a signed Acquisition of Rights contract between the French publisher and American publisher.
Hemingway Grant:
You will need to provide a signed Acquisition of Rights contract shortly after being notified of our decision.
Acquisition of Rights:
You cannot apply to the Acquisition of Rights program without a previously signed Acquisition of Rights contract. And please note that you cannot apply if you have already paid the advance of the acquisition of rights to the French Publisher.

Is the French Voices Award only available to American citizens?
For example: I am not an American translator. Can I submit an application to the French Voices program?

You need not be an American citizen to apply; however, the publishing house of the work in translation must be American.

Is there a limit on the number of applications I can submit?
There is no limit on the number of applications you can submit.

If my project does not receive a translation assistance grant, can I re-submit my application?
You cannot submit the same application twice.

What literary genres are eligible for these awards?
Support is given to works of fiction, non-fiction and poetry alike (illustrated and digital books included).
No support will be granted to school books or practical guides.

I am having trouble uploading one or several documents; could I send them by email?
Please check the size of your documents first. Documents sizes should not exceed 5mb (10mb for the translation excerpts). All files should have different names. If you’re still having problems please send your documents to 972livre@gmail.com.

Will sending other documents (press reviews…) help my application?
Please submit only the requested forms. We will not consider additional documents in the selection process.
