FACE Foundation

- Supporting French-American Cultural Exchange in Education and the Arts

FACE in Los Angeles

Overview

The Los Angeles Chapter of FACE Foundation is committed to fostering connection between the city of Los Angeles, the southwestern region of the United States, and the nation of France. By focusing on three main cultural fields: Art, Education, and Cinema, FACE in Los Angeles engages, entwines, and elevates the offerings of these communities.

  • The Arts

We support numerous projects in various fields, such as contemporary art, performing and visual arts, music, etc. Through these initiatives, we initiate and strengthen exchanges between French and Los Angeles artists, curators, and institutions. Our main objective is to bring artistic communities together and inspire future long-term and solid collaborations.

  • Education, Higher Education & promotion of French Language

The promotion of a renewed approach to the French language and Francophone cultures is at the heart of our activity, both with schools offering French immersion programs and with higher education institutions. Our work also aims to diversify mobility and partnerships between France and the United States, particularly involving Community colleges.

  • Cinema

From Los Angeles, we feel it is essential to support French cinema in California by promoting the films involved in the Oscar campaign, but more broadly by giving visibility to French productions (films and series) in American festivals. Promoting the attractiveness of France as a location for American productions also feeds our relationship with the local film community.

Our Initiatives

FOSTERING NEW RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN FRENCH AND AMERICAN ARTISTIC INSTITUTIONS & ASSOCIATIONS:

  • Since the launching of Villa Albertine in 2021, Los Angeles has welcomed 13 residents in parternship with the Consulate. It is important to us to support as many artists and writers as possible in all disciplines: our cultural richness and diversity was brilliantly represented in 2022 by composers, museographers and choreographers.
  • Numerous Cultural Events take place every year thanks to the FACE Foundation. These highlights are built around annual programs such as Shoot the Book! and Boulevard des séries but we also seize every year new opportunities to promote French culture in the US.
  • We also pay particular attention to fostering public debate around cultural issues. Indeed, each year, the Night of Ideas offers a unique moment of reflection on a given theme, thanks to various researchers and speakers.
  • In 2023, our new Museums & Cultural Heritage will renew the Franco-American dialogue between Museums  and our Dance Focus will allow talented French choreographers and companies to discover the Los Angeles scene.

PROMOTING FRENCH AND FRANCOPHONE LANGUAGE & CULTURE
FOR K-12 AND UNIVERSITY STUDENTS:

  • We encourage international mobility and Franco-American collaborations through Scholarship Programs and TAPIF (teaching assistant program in France). Year after year, the winners strengthen the alumni network in the United States and promote the French language and culture.
  • French is a language of culture but it help students enter the job market. This is why we promote the teaching of French for Professional Purposes relying on our local partners such as universities, Alliances françaises, and the American Association of Teachers of French (AATF).
  • Equal opportunity is a priority for us; this is why we target our actions on Community Colleges in France to open up the world to the least privileged students. For example, we organize bootcamps in France for community colleges.
